Artist's Description
My husband and our Greek friend were having a conversation regarding the Battle of Thermopylae and spoke the term Molon Labe, which means, "come and take them" . It peaked my interest and I wanted to know more. Persia was invading Greece by the guidance of Xerxes, Greece was being defended by King Leonidas I. When Xerxes tried to force Leonidas to lay down their weapons and Greece would be given better land, Leonidas said "Never, come and take them" aka Molon Labe. Another famous quote by Leonidas was when he was told "the sun would be blacked out by the arrows of the barbarians, his reply was " then we shall be lucky to fight in the shade. It was a great battle the Greeks were outnumbered by the thousands but they refused to give up. Something we all should remember today. "Never give up"
